Folder Size 2.4.0.0 is released and optimized even more than the previous version.

The application now uses about 50% less memory during scan and can easily handle millions folders and files. The project files are now saved and loaded much faster and consume less disk space too. The save/load operations now require almost no additional memory.

Major changes are done to the export functionality. The XML export is now tens to hundreds times faster with a memory consumption close to zero. This will let you easier export huge projects in less time. The same applies also to the CSV export, which was already fast and the change in performance is not so big.

New features that will let you automate the scan process are now added. The command line options will let you scan a location and directly save it to a project file and/or export it with as single command. You can also schedule periodic scans by executing the command via the Windows Task Scheduler. We have also provided the variables {DATE} and {TIME} which will be replaced with the current date and time. You can use it in the command line in order to keep track of the scan reports. Here is a sample command line:

FolderSize -scan “F:mp3” -exp “d:mp3_{DATE} {TIME}.xml;d:mp3_{DATE} {TIME}.fsp;d:mp3_{DATE} {TIME}.csv” –s

Additional options will let you control the content of the exported data. This includes whether the file names inside the folders are exported or not. If you disable the option only the folder names will be exported including the information for their sizes.
Another option lets you control the export depth. You can export for example only the top level folder and its immediate sub-folders and/or files by specifying an export depth of two (2). A separate section in the CSV and XML files with information about the scan locations can be added optionally from the export settings. Such information contains the total size, occupied space and free space about the drives or network locations.

The owners of the Personal and Professional versions can now hide the download buttons from the toolbar in order to save space.

Folder size will analyze your storage and display all the sizes of the files and folders. As you can not view the folder sizes in Windows Explorer you can not determine which folders occupy the largest space. This is the issue that Folder Size solves. It displays the largest files and folders.

One thing I would like to say is that before getting more computer system memory, look into the machine in to which it could well be installed. In case the machine can be running Windows XP, for instance, a memory threshold is 3.25GB. The installation of more than this would purely constitute just a waste. Make sure one’s mother board can handle this upgrade volume, as well. Good blog post.
