Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder 6.4.0.1 Brings New Features For The Holidays – Find Similar Photos Even if Some Of Them Have Borders/Frames And The Others No

Two major new features are added to VSDIF – an option for detecting similar photos with borders/frames and an auto-check feature for selecting images with shorter file names.

Auto-check Images With Shorter File Names

The name of the feature is quite self-explanatory – it will mark the files with the shortest file names first leaving the one with the longest name unmarked. Some users prefer to rename their photos by adding descriptive file names and this feature helps exactly in such cases. One ca easily remove the files that are not renamed as those are usually with short file names generated automatically by the camera. VSDIF already has an option to auto-mark files with longer file names for cases where the user wants to remove duplicate copies that usually are named COPY (X) of….

Detect Similar Images With Solid Borders

While this new feature is not a miracle and it may fail with multi-color complex frames that alter the appearance of the image completely, it does quite a good job when the word comes for simple frames and borders. It comes handy also in cases where the photos are scanned – this process usually generates extra borders around the images. As this new feature is not resource-intensive it is enabled by default in the application settings. Though it will not make noticeable difference in terms of performance for medium-sized image libraries it can be turned off in the application settings if one intends to compare large quantities of photos that are known not to include borders. The feature also helps to detect images that are saved or captured from the web and usually include part of the background.

Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder 5.6.0.1 is Released And Available For Download

Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder is an superb tool that outperforms the standard duplicate file finders and can recognize similar photos even if they are stored in different file formats. It can compare a jpg, png and a RAW file for example and identify that they are similar. This is a task that can not be handled by common duplicate file finders that are available on the market.

The Key New Features Of The Duplicate Photo Finder Tool

Filtering Duplicate Photos

A handy new option is added in the filtering dialog that makes it possible to filter folders by a phrase including wildcards. For example if the text “copy” is added – all the folders that contain “copy” in the name will be matched. Combinations of phrases can be used by separating them with a vertical line e.g.: “copy|backup|bckp”. In this example along with the folders that contain the phrase “copy” in their name will be listed also the ones that contain “backup” and those that contain “bckp”. A more sophisticated example is “b??(*)*” – it will match all folders starting with “b” followed by two characters then an opening bracket followed by one character and then a closing bracket followed by any number of characters. If the example is not clear enough the asterisk denotes that zero or more characters should be present and the question mark denotes that exactly one character should be present at that position. The combinations are endless and it is easy to match any folder’s name with high precision.

Duplicate Photo Finder User Interface And Features Improvements

Clicking on the folders grid header icons now checks/unchecks all folders for either exclusion from “Auto-check” or from “Self-scan”. The browse for folder dialog is updated so if no folders are marked, the currently selected folder is added. This makes it easier when adding a single folder to the list.

There is a hex error code for every delete/move file operation that fails. This makes it easier to identify the problem e.g. if the files is in use, if the user account used to start the application does not have sufficient permissions to manipulate the file, it he file is stored on a read only media and so on. All the error codes can be found at the Duplicate Photo Finder FAQ page

A new “Zoom To Fit” check-box in the large preview window makes it easier to view the entire photo by automatically resizing it to fit the preview windows.

There is a small fix in the Corporate version where the firs file in the “-des_list” is not compared in certain cases. This applies to the command line feature and the issue has been present only while comparing “-src_list” vs “-dest_list”.

This new version includes also the new features of the internal 5.3.0.1 release.

Improved Multi-threaded Performance

While VSDIF is extremely optimized in terms of CPU usage this new release provides some extra improvements and optimizations related to the multi-threaded performance. This speed optimization is not as big as those in recent updates, but it can make a difference on large collections.

Compare Folders – Compare Photo Libraries

This new feature provides a dialog box where a folder can be compared against one or more folder. This is a handy option when synchronizing multiple photo libraries. This feature is available only in the PRO and Corporate versions.

Improved Rotated/Flipped Image Comparison Performance

There is a huge performance improvement in this release when comparing rotated or flipped images. This version can be thousands of times faster in such cases.

Better Duplicate Photo Sorting

Sorting the images is now applied to the entire gird rather than sorting the items inside a group. The duplicate photo results can now be sorted by any property preserving the group integrity at the same time. This means that the list can be sorted by file size in order to remove the largest images or by file date in order to remove the oldest images first.

Additional Duplicate Photo Finder Improvements

The default cache name issue while using different precision levels is now fixed. This release provides extra backward compatibility and will load old projects without any issues. A small glitch in the cursor state when the application is paused is also fixed.
