The Key New Features Of The Duplicate File Finder Tool

Filtering Duplicate Files by Accessed, Created And Modified Dates

The Created, Accessed and Modified dates are a property of every file and folder. The tool utilized only the Modified date in the past, but sometimes using the Created and Accessed dates may be necessary. Fulfilling the wish of our users we have added all the three dates in the application. The Modified, Accessed and Created dates are now listed in the results table. Of course if one does not need all those dates, they can be easily hidden in the application settings in order not to clutter the display.

The corresponding changes are applied everywhere in the application and those include the Filter Dialog, Auto Check, Quick Check and Advanced Auto Check options.

The newly added date fields are also included in the export features.

This release fixes also some bugs and provides improvements. An issue that prevented the move operation on network shares in certain cases is now fixed. An improvement in the project save/load functionality preserves the groups order. A fix for the similarity slider makes it possible to set 100% using the mouse buttons or wheel – this was possible only by typing the number manually in the past releases.

Filtering Duplicate Files

A handy new option is added in the filtering dialog that makes it possible to filter folders by a phrase including wildcards. For example if the text “copy” is added – all the folders that contain “copy” in the name will be matched. Combinations of phrases can be used by separating them with a vertical line e.g.: “copy|backup|bckp”. In this example along with the folders that contain the phrase “copy” in their name will be listed also the ones that contain “backup” and those that contain “bckp”. A more sophisticated example is “b??(*)*” – it will match all folders starting with “b” followed by two characters then an opening bracket followed by one character and then a closing bracket followed by any number of characters. If the example is not clear enough the asterisk denotes that zero or more characters should be present and the question mark denotes that exactly one character should be present at that position. The combinations are endless and it is easy to match any folder’s name with high precision. Here is a screenshot of the new filtering window:

Duplicate File Finder User Interface And Features Improvements

Clicking on the folders grid header icons now checks/unchecks all folders for either exclusion from “Auto-check” or from “Self-scan”. The browse for folder dialog is updated so if no folders are marked, the currently selected folder is added. This makes it easier when adding a single folder to the list.

There is a hex error code for every delete/move file operation that fails. This makes it easier to identify the problem e.g. if the files is in use, if the user account used to start the application does not have sufficient permissions to manipulate the file, it he file is stored on a read only media and so on. All the error codes can be found at the Duplicate File Finder FAQ page

A new option to Keep Folder Structure while moving files is now added to the application. In the previous versions it was always ON by default. This new feature also takes care of file name conflicts in cases where two or more files with the same name from different locations are moved to the same folder. If the file “report.doc” for example is moved to the same folder from multiple locations the extra copies will be moved with the name “report (1).doc”, “report (2).doc” and so on.

Earlier versions of Fast Duplicate File Finder ignored the desktop folders if the “Protection for system files and folders” was enabled in settings. (This option is enabled by default in order to prevent damages to the operating system by novice users). Current version will scan the desktop folders even if that option is enabled as many users store their files on the desktop. In order to prevent damages to the desktops of other user the application will ignore shortcut files which are intentionally duplicated over the desktops of every user. E.g. two different users can have shortcuts to the same applications.

Version 4.0.0.1 of The Popular Fast Duplicate File Finder Is Released

This new release provides some fixes and two new features. There are two new context menu items in the results list.

Free Duplicate Finder

The first one “Remove from List…” will remove the selected items from the list. After the remove operation if the group contains only one item it will be automatically removed if the option “Remove from list groups containing single file after move/delete”. This handy new feature can be used to remove items that should be kept from the list. Please note that this feature removes just the item from the list – not the actual file.

The other option is “Remove Group from List…”. Using the feature will remove the entire group to which the selected item(s) belongs. Multiple items can be selected and removed at once.

The fixes include a modification that enabled the tool to load projects with older file formats. Deleting large amounts of files is optimized in this release and handled better and faster. An issue that prevented the program form showing results when using vertically rotated desktops is now removed. Associated file icons are now retrieved in faster and safer.

Find Duplicate Files That Have Names in Multiple Languages Simultaneously – Full Unicode Support

While Fast Duplicate File Finder could scan files named in any character set (Language) it could scan only two languages simultaneously. The default one in your system and the one set for non-unicode applications. While this is not an issue for most of the users now this limitation no longer exists. The application is capable of listing results in any alphabet simultaneously. For example you can have files in Chinese, Greek or Arabic language listed in the results at the same time.

Preview Duplicate Microsoft Word (doc) and Excel (xls) Files

There is a support for XLS and DOC files right inside the Duplicate File Finder’s preview window. This feature requires the corresponding Microsoft Word and Excel applications to be installed on the computer. As loading large doc and xls files can take several seconds ( this is something that depends on the installed Word and Excel applications ) there is an option to disable the preview for them in settings.

Improved Folder Comparison Features

The “Exclude From Self Scan” and “Disable auto-check for this folder” items are now listed as check-boxes inside the folders list. That helps to easier visualize the configuration of the current project. The two features are handy when one needs to merge two or more folders and set one or more of them as “Source”. The “Exclude From Self Scan” option denotes that the files inside that folder will not be compared with each other. They will be compared only with the file in the rest of the folders that are added in the project. The “Disable auto-check for this folder” is pretty self-explanatory – if the auto-check feature is used the items in the folder will not be marked.

Improved Duplicate Files Sort

Sorting duplicate files in past versions was performed inside the groups in order not to break the group integrity. It would not make any sense to have the files sorted by size and have files from different groups listed together. The new improved sort will sort the items inside the groups as in past versions and also sort all groups keeping the items inside together. Now if you sort the items by size in descending order the groups that contain the largest items will be listed firs.

Find Duplicate Files With Same Name or Similar Name and Different Extension

The “Similar File Names” search mode now includes an option “Do not compare file extensions”. This tells the application to compare only the file names without their extension. This is handy in order to find duplicate files like “Beat It.mp3”, “Beat It.wav”, “Beat It.ogg” or “Wedding.avi”, “Wedding.mp4”, “Wedding.mkv” and so on. An extremely handy feature that can find multiple versions of the same file that are converted to different file formats.

Additional Duplicate File Finder Improvements

These include faster delete/move operations on large amount of files. Improved scan speed for folders that contain large number of files. The information panel above the results grid is now updated after every delete or move operation. There are a lot of other small GUI fixes and enhancements that are not worth mentioning.

Two search modes in this release are optimized. The improvements in the “100% Equal Files” mode are tremendous when scanning large file volumes. The improved algorithm can be thousands of times faster depending on the quantity and size of the scanned files. There are huge performance optimizations also for the auto-check and the final stage of the scan where the application required longer time to finalize for large quantities of files.

The “Similar Files” mode which is available in the PRO version of the product is now also optimized and more stable. Nevertheless let me remind here that this is not the commonly advertised FUZZY search method that provides low quality results. The search for similar files inside Fast Duplicate File Finder PRO performs advanced algorithms in order to find truly similar files and can recognize two similar documents even if entire paragraphs are rearranged.

Some additional command line options are added to the PRO version of the tool in order to help with the automation of duplicate finding tasks. To the already present -run option our developers have added the options -s and -exp.

-exp <semicolon delimited list of export formats> – Export command line parameter. Depending on the file extension will export the corresponding file type. Multiple formats can be exported at once by separating the paths with semicolons. The variables {DATE} and {TIME} will be replaced with the current date and time.

-s – stands for SILENT. Using the option the GUI will not be displayed during the scan and the application will exit after the command line actions are processed.

Example: DupFileFinder.exe -run -s -exp “c:result_{DATE} {TIME}.xml;c:result_{DATE} {TIME}.fdff;c:result_{DATE} {TIME}.csv”

The {DATE} and {TIME} variables are useful to keep track of the scan data and tag it with the corresponding date and time.

The new version adds support for symbolic links in Windows 7. Among the new enhancements are the Move/Delete files, results window and other small GUI fixes. In this new release the program can delete read-only files.

Fast Duplicate File Finder will check for Recycle Bin size and show a warning if you want to delete the files to Recycle Bin and there is not enough space available. Some CSV export issues are now fixed.

Fast Duplicate File Finder 2.8.0.1 is available for download. In the new version you can pause and continue the scan process. The duplicates list can now be customized via the new tab in the options. You can choose which columns to be visible and which not. If you are unchecking a selection of files and there is a manually checked file in the list a warning message will be displayed. Hints in the filter dialog will display the full folder location if it doesn’t fit in the “Don’t Scan Folders” box. The improved folder selection dialog will let you select multiple folders simultaneously. The preview window has a lot of improvements and now uses Media Player 9 to preview video files. The fixes include some fixes related to moving files and a lot of improvements to the GUI.

Fast Duplicate Photo Search – Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder 3.0.0.1 is released

The next generation of Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder is released. Along with the countless improvements the new version is packed with new features.

EXIF Scan options - Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder A new scan method is available based on EXIF timestamp. “EXIF Date Time Original” will compare only the EXIF timestamp of the photos and group them according to the time difference in seconds set by the user. This new feature is very handy for finding sets of photographs taken in burst mode. If you shoot in RAW mode you can choose the best shots from the set and save valuable space by deleting the rest. (see the screenshots on the right)

The scan precision in “Visual Compare” mode is now increased and lets you set a fractional part. You can now set precise percentage e.g. – 95.1%, 95.2%, etc.

The files checked by the user are now marked in a different color (blended green) than the ones from the auto-mark feature. This lets you easily distinguish the modifications in the list that you have applied manually.

The comparing images phase is now 50% faster than before. We are constantly improving the performance of the tool and we will soon release a comparison table for your reference.
There are some slight improvements in the GUI too. Line numbers are added in the duplicate results grid for easier navigation. New keyboard shortcuts are also available :

Ctrl+K checks selected files (also available as a popup menu)
Ctrl+U unchecks selected files (also available as a popup menu)
Ctrl+I inverts the checked status of the selected files (also available as a popup menu)
Ctrl+A selects all files in the list
Left and Right arrow keys can now be used to navigate in the big preview window.
Enter and ‘C’ key now checks/unchecks the duplicate in the big preview window.

The project file size is reduced with 50% and loads faster. An important issue is fixed that was causing the application to freeze when the user tries to move duplicate images and there is not enough free space on target device.

An improved management of large files (over 2GB) is applied.
