Print Folder Sizes And Folder Tree – Folder Size 4.5.0.0

Folder Size was already providing many options to export the folders and print their content but was missing an option to print the folder tree which is located on the left side of the application. The latest version provides an option to print folder sizes tree.

The new options for expanding and collapsing all subfolders are mainly related to this new feature. They should be useful when printing the folder tree in order to expand and collapse multiple folders quickly. Right-click a folder and select “Expand All Sub-folders”. If you want to collapse a certain folder in the tree select “Collapse All Sub-folders”. Using the “minus” icon can do this too, but it does not collapse the subfolders that are located inside.

Here is the complete change-log for this release – Folder Size What’s New?

How To Print Folder Sizes?

The new feature is extremely easy to use.

  1. Firstly scan the drives or folders that you wish to print. The folder tree on the left-hand side of the application will list the results. Certainly it includes all the folder sizes too.
  2. Secondly, expand the folders that you want to print. Use the new options in the popup menu if you want to expand all subfolders.
  3. After that resize the “Folder Name” column in order to fit all the listed items. The easiest way to do this is to expand the desired folders and then double-click the separator between the “Folder Name” and “Folder Size” columns in the header. This will automatically expand the “Folder Name” column to the size of the longest folder path. If you have expanded too many folders then this operation may take some time – wait for it to complete.
  4. Once you have set the desired state for the folders to be printed select File->Print Folder Tree…
  5. As a result, the print preview window will be displayed. It provides all the options that were already available for printing files. Use the page orientation, print area, margins and all the other options that are listed to format the page.

Print Folder Sizes – Print Preview Settings

Here we will take a look at the options that are available in the print preview window.

Print Folder Sizes

Print Folder Sizes – Print Preview

  1. Open – Loads Print Preview file – *.ppv
  2. Save – Saves all the pages in the current Print Preview Window in a PPV file.
  3. Print To PDF – Select a file name to save the pages as PDF file.
  4. Save as a multi-frame TIFF image.
  5. Print – Will send the pages to the default printer.
  6. Printer Setup – Allows you to set up your printer options.
  7. Show Page Setup – provides options to set margins, paper size, and page orientation.
  8. Show printer’s printable area – displays dotted red frame around the exact printable area
  9. Zoom Out, Zoom To, and Zoom – Use them to adjust the currently visible area of the page
  10. Toggle grayscale mode on or off
  11. Limit printing to one page horizontally – If you have long folder names the tool will print the folders tree to as many horizontal pages as required. Therefore, it allows you to stitch the pages and create a poster. You can limit printing to one page horizontally if required.
  12. The rest of the four buttons allow you to navigate through the pages. Likewise, the left side of the print preview includes thumbnails of the pages that you can use to navigate too.

Print Folder Sizes – Print To File Or Printer

Finally, after you have set everything up just hit the PRINT button to start printing. As a result, it will send the pages to your default printer. Certainly, a better choice is to print to file and go green. For example use the options to print to PPV (Print Preview), EMF, Multi-page TIFF or PDF file. You can print those files later if needed. There are many ways to print folders, but Folder Size makes things very easy.

Folder Size is a FREE tool aimed towards disk cleanup. Printing directory is the least it can do for you.

Folder Size 4.2.0.0 – Buttery-Smooth Pie and Bar Charts – View Folder Sizes Better

List Files Inside System Volumt Information, Backup Folders and System Folders

Folder Size – Free Disk Size Analysis

As already announced, the latest version of Folder Size is no longer using Adobe Flash for its charts as it is an outdated technology and a potential security hole. The new charts introduced in version 4.0.0.0 were good, but we took a step further to make them GREAT.

Improved Chart Performance and Hardware Acceleration – Smoother Graphics and Fonts

The new release enables hardware acceleration for the charts which dramatically improves performance. The new charts will run at least three times faster and possibly even more depending on the hardware configuration – the video card installed in the system. The quoted “3 times higher” performance should be easily achieved even with a basic onboard graphics card. No changes are required on the user end in order to enable the hardware acceleration – installing the new version is sufficient to make it work.

Pie Chart of Folder Sizes

Besides the performance optimizations the charts now look smoother which includes both graphics and text. There is a better anti-aliasing (Cleartype) algorithm that eliminates any jagged edges.

Colors are replaced with softer, yet pleasing alternatives that are easy on the eyes.

Some small bug fixes not worth mentioning in details are also available in this release. A list of all the new features and fixes can be found on the What’s new page of Folder Size

Folder Size 4.1.0.0 – Easy Disk Cleanup Tool

The latest version of Folder Size is oriented towards performance and stability. Due to the many new features in version 4.0.0.0 and the many operating systems that Folder Size supports there were issues in certain software configurations. This release provides a lot of fixes and optimizations related to the charts and scan results. Although those issues are not present on all operating systems, installing this update is highly recommended.

Folder Size 4.0.0.0 64 Bit – Scans Larger Drives Faster And Provides New Charts

Folder Size Supports Native 64 Bit Operating systems

Folder Size 64 Bit

Freeware Folder Size 4.0.0.0 Provides Native 64 Bit OS Support And Removes Adobe Flash Requirement

Folder Size Native 64 Bit Operating Systems Support

Folder Size was already running under 64 Bit operating systems, but that had some limitations as it was a 32 Bit application. Under Windows, 32 Bit applications are limited to use 2 gigabytes of memory and though Folder Size is extremely optimized in terms of memory usage and performance that could cause a problem when scanning volumes that contain many small files. The used memory does not depend on the size of the scanned location, but on the quantity of files and folders that it contains. The 64 Bit version not only removes this limitation completely (the tool will use all the available memory on the system), but will also run faster because of the native 64 bit instructions used.

Folder Size No Longer Uses Adobe Flash Charts

While the charts in Folder Size were beautiful they used Adobe Flash. It was popular in the past and was available on almost every computer, but it has always been a potential security hole and was avoided by the majority of the system administrators and advanced users. As Folder Size is used on server systems many system administrators had to use it without the charting due to the missing Adobe Flash on the system or scan the server over the network which is much slower. As we believe that security is a serious topic we have removed the Adobe Flash usage completely. The new charts look almost identical to the old ones and maybe even better. Let us know your opinion in the comments.

Folder Size Handles Long Paths And File Names Better Than Windows Explorer

Many users do not realize that Windows has a limit of 260 characters per path including the file name and use huge names for their folders. This often is true for photo and music and other personal folders and use names like – “Photos from December 2015 – Our great vacation with Dharma and Greg and their lovely children and uncle Steve at the sunny coasts of Puerto Rico”. Of course such folder structure will cause only problems in Windows as even Windows Explorer will not properly manage paths longer than 260 characters. We have enabled Folder Size to scan and list such folders properly with few minor exceptions. Icons for very long paths can not be displayed as the Windows system does not support that and such files can not be located in Windows Explorer as it does not support them too, but the paths, files and their sizes will be properly listed inside Folder Size.

There are some extra minor improvements and fixes in this release.

This new release of Folder Size provides a lot of new features and improvements. Some requested by YOU – our valuable customers some designed to make things easier and clearer.

Longest Paths And File Names Report

As the name suggests this report sorts all files in a folder and all its sub-folders by path length. This makes it easy to identify long paths that may cause problems during data migration and backup processes. Long paths may cause issues also with the system and certain applications. Though the recommended path size in Windows should not exceed 260 characters there are certain cases where creating such paths is possible. Of course such paths cause issues at a later stage when accessed. The new report makes it easy to identify and fix those long paths.

Freeware Folder Size 3.4.0.0 Can Reveal Lost Disk Space And Is Packed With Six New File Reports

This new release of Folder Size provides a lot of new features and improvements. It can now scan all the system and backup folders and reveal even more details about the used space and hidden files. There are six new reports and some additional features and fixes.

List folder sizes of backup locations, system folders and system volume information

Folder Size can now reveal all those hidden folders and list their contents and sizes. This makes it easy to spot the lost disk space used for backups and copy of system files as such information can not be listed inside Windows Explorer even using an Administrator account.

The new feature works automatically on systems prior to Windows Vista where UAC is introduced by Microsoft. In order to list this detailed information on Windows Vista and newer operating system the application should be started using the “Run as Administrator” context menu option. There is also a new toolbar button named “Restart with Administrator privileges” which will be enabled only if such action is necessary.

Nothing can stay hidden from Folder Size with this brand new release.

Analyze Hard Drives – Free Up Gigabytes of Disk Space in Seconds

Folder Size version 3.0.0.0 is released – a major version packed with plenty of new features and improvements. What is so important about this update?

Unicode ( Multi-language ) Folder Size Analysis

Folder Size did already scan files in multiple languages, but it could scan files in no more than 2 Languages at the same time. The second language had to be set as a language for non-unicode applications in the settings panel of Windows. This is no longer necessary and Folder Size can scan files in any language at the same time.

Analyze File Sizes of Multiple Hard Drives or Network Locations Simultaneously

There is a brand new dialog box that can be used to select multiple drives or folder to be scanned. If there are more than one physical drives in the computer this will reduce the scan time dramatically as the only speed limit in the application is the one of the hard drive. The scan type switches automatically to drive or folder depending on the selection. If a combination is needed the drives can be added to the folders list via the “Add Folder” button. UNC paths can be added in the folders list for network locations – e.g. \\servername\c$ etc. The command line and drag’n’drop scan operations now support parallel scan too. Here is a preview of the new “Scan Multiple Locations” dialog:

Bug fixes & Improved Folder Navigation

Using a mouse with forward and back buttons? Well this version supports them and you can use them for navigation the same way as in Windows Explorer. This release includes a lot of small bug fixes and improvement too, but they are not worth mentioning here. A full change-log can be found here.

Windows 8 Folder Size – Mixed “Largest files and folders” report

File Size Analysis

Windows 8 Folder Size

Folder Size 2.9.0.0 is now fully compatible with the Windows 8 operating system. The new release has also improved memory management for both 32 and 64 bit operating systems and can now utilize up to 3 Gb of memory on 32 bit operating systems and 4 gb on 64 bit.

Read here how to enable 4GT (4-Gigabyte Tuning Windows)  on x86 systems: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb613473%28v=vs.85%29.aspx.

Even though the application is extremely optimized, just listing the names of millions of files and folders requires a lot of memory. The application can now handle larger than 100 TB drives easily. If you are not interested in the file details a new option “Do not list files” is available in the settings. Using the option will dramatically reduce the memory usage and also improve scan performance.

The count of the selected files and folders is now displayed in the status bar. If no selection is active the count of the files and folders in the currently viewed folder will be displayed.

An annoying bug that displayed the message “There is no default printer currently selected” on every start-up on configurations without printer is now corrected.

The installer now includes an option whether to create or not the ‘Scan with Folder Size’ context menu.

There are also some small bug fixes applied to the new version. You can read the complete list of all the new features and changes in Folder Size 2.9.0.0 here.
