Audio Dedupe 4.3.0.1 –  Find Similar Songs

Audio Dedupe is the best tool for finding similar and duplicate songs. It can compare audio files even if they are stored in different audio formats. This is a task that no standard duplicate finder can achieve. If the songs have titles and artists the tool can search those for similarities too. Find what is new in this release below.

Fast Save, Load and Export

Fast is actually not very proper description for this optimization as it can be hundreds of times faster on large projects. The code is completely redesigned and provides lighting fast performance. It can load, save or export hundreds of thousands of results in seconds.

Option “Match full path” in Advanced Auto-Check

This option makes it possible to exclude folder names that contain certain characters or words in the name. In past version there was an option to match only file names.

Duplicates and scanned files count

Duplicates and scanned files count are displayed above the results grid.

Find duplicate WebP images – VSDIF 7.2.0.1

The latest version of Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder provides support for the WebP image format that was announced by Google as a new open standard for lossy compressed true-color graphics on the web. Current WebP implementation supports both lossy and lossless compression including alpha (transparency) channel. (Find more information on the WebP image format below)

The corrupt DNG images issue

We received complaints from our users who use Adobe Lightroom and DNG files, that VSDIF may crash on preview and/or scan of damaged DNG files. Our research on the topic fond many forum posts regarding DNG files and Adobe Lightroom – Google for: “dng+files+lightroom+corrupt”
We have not investigated those in details, but if you experienced issues with DNG files you should check those posts and the version of Adobe Lightroom that you are using. We have not analyzed those in details nor we claim that a relation between the damaged DNG files and Lightroom exists, but according to the search results above such possibility can not be excluded. The latest version of VSDIF can not load the DNG files as they are corrupt, but it will not crash.

A pre-release fix for the above issue was already provided to all our customers and it is included in this new version.

WebP – A new image format for the Web

Here is a quote from Google – ” WebP is a modern image format that provides superior lossless and lossy compression for images on the web. Using WebP, webmasters and web developers can create smaller, richer images that make the web faster.”

Announced in 2010 the format aimed to produce smaller files of similar image quality to the popular JPEG scheme. Later Google announced WebP support for animation, ICC profile, XMP metadata, and tiling (compositing very large images from maximum 16384×16384 tiles). Google began to experiment with lossless compression and support for transparency (alpha channel) in both lossless and lossy modes; support has been enabled by default in libwebp 0.2.0 (16 August 2012). Google’s tests reveal that a conversion from PNG to WebP results in a 45% reduction in file size when using PNGs found on the Internet, and a 28% reduction in size when compared to PNGs that are recompressed with pngcrush or PNGOUT.

WebP Support

Google Chrome, Firefox, Edge, the Opera browser, and other tools and software libraries support natively WebP. Developers have also added support to a variety of image editing tools.

The Key New Features Of The Duplicate Audio Finder Tool

Filtering Duplicate Audio Files

The filtering panel provides a handy new option that makes it possible to filter folders by a phrase including wildcards. If the text “original” is entered – all the folders that contain “original” in the name will be matched. Vertical line e.g.: “copy|backup|bckp” can be used in order to specify and combine several phrases. Using the above example all the folders that contain “copy”,“backup” or “bckp” will be matched. A more sophisticated example is “b??(*)*” – it will match all folders starting with “b” followed by two characters then an opening bracket followed by one character and then a closing bracket followed by any number of characters.

The asterisk denotes that zero or more characters should be present and the question mark denotes that exactly one character should be present at that position. There are unlimited number of combinations that can be created in order to match a specific folder name. A screenshot of the new filtering window is available below:

Duplicate Music Finder User Interface And Features Improvements

Exclusion from “Auto-check” or from “Self-scan” can now be set for all folders in the list by clicking on the header of the corresponding column. The browse for folder dialog is also updated. If no folders are checked, the currently selected folder is added. This makes it easier to add a single folder to the list and saves the extra click to check it.

Every delete/move file operation that fails displays a HEX (hexadecimal) error code. That makes it easier to isolate the issue e.g. if the files is locked by another application, if the user account used to start the application does not have sufficient permissions to manipulate the file, if the file is stored on a read only media and so on. All the error codes can be found at the Duplicate MP3 Finder FAQ page

“Keep Folder Structure while moving files” is now optional. In previous versions of Audio Dedupe it was ON by default. Name conflicts in cases where there are more files with the same name from different locations that should be moved to the same backup folder are also solved. If the file “Intro.mp3” for example is moved to the same folder from multiple locations the extra copies will be moved with the name “Intro (1).mp3”, “Intro (2).mp3” and so on. While it does not make much sense if the source files are exact duplicates it is useful to preserve the source files if they are similar versions, but not 100% duplicates.

The Key New Features Of The Duplicate Photo Finder Tool

Filtering Duplicate Photos

A handy new option is added in the filtering dialog that makes it possible to filter folders by a phrase including wildcards. For example if the text “copy” is added – all the folders that contain “copy” in the name will be matched. Combinations of phrases can be used by separating them with a vertical line e.g.: “copy|backup|bckp”. In this example along with the folders that contain the phrase “copy” in their name will be listed also the ones that contain “backup” and those that contain “bckp”. A more sophisticated example is “b??(*)*” – it will match all folders starting with “b” followed by two characters then an opening bracket followed by one character and then a closing bracket followed by any number of characters. If the example is not clear enough the asterisk denotes that zero or more characters should be present and the question mark denotes that exactly one character should be present at that position. The combinations are endless and it is easy to match any folder’s name with high precision.

Duplicate Photo Finder User Interface And Features Improvements

Clicking on the folders grid header icons now checks/unchecks all folders for either exclusion from “Auto-check” or from “Self-scan”. The browse for folder dialog is updated so if no folders are marked, the currently selected folder is added. This makes it easier when adding a single folder to the list.

There is a hex error code for every delete/move file operation that fails. This makes it easier to identify the problem e.g. if the files is in use, if the user account used to start the application does not have sufficient permissions to manipulate the file, it he file is stored on a read only media and so on. All the error codes can be found at the Duplicate Photo Finder FAQ page

A new “Zoom To Fit” check-box in the large preview window makes it easier to view the entire photo by automatically resizing it to fit the preview windows.

There is a small fix in the Corporate version where the firs file in the “-des_list” is not compared in certain cases. This applies to the command line feature and the issue has been present only while comparing “-src_list” vs “-dest_list”.

Duplicate File Finder – How to Filter Files and Folders

Duplicate File Finder

How to Filter Files and Folders When Searching For Duplicates

When looking for duplicates it is sometimes necessary to filter the results by file type, folder location, file attributes like date or size, file name and other properties – this is possible using the filtering functionality inside Duplicate File Finder.

The filtering settings should be applied prior to starting a scan. This can lead to a much quicker scan if one is interested only in certain file types or locations.

There are plenty of filtering options that can be applied, inside Fast Duplicate File Finder.

Enabling and disabling the filtering option when searching for duplicate files

The filter button is a two state button at the top of the application represented with a funnel icon. When it is off pressing the button will display the filtering options. If the options are applied using the OK button the filtering tool button will stay pressed denoting that filtering is applied. If the filtering dialog is canceled the filtering tool button will remain unpressed denoting that no filtering is applied.

If the filtering tool button is pressed, pressing the button for the second time will disable the filtering and the tool button will go up. Pressing the button for the second time, when it is in its unpressed state will display the filtering window where the last filter can be edited and applied.

Duplicate File Finder Filtering Options

Including or Excluding Matches From Duplicate Search

At the bottom of the filtering dialog there is an option that determines whether the items matched by the filtering options will be included or excluded from the results.

Filtering Duplicates By Folder

The folders pane can be used in order to filter the duplicates by location. There are button at the bottom to add or remove folders. The remove button works on the currently selected item.

Filtering Duplicate Files By Type – File Extension

The File Extensions panel provides options to filter files by type. Extensions in format *.ext (asterisk dot extension) can be added in the list. Use the check-boxes in the list in order to toggle file types on or off. The unused (unchecked) items will be removed automatically when the application is restarted.

Filtering Duplicates By File Attributes – File Date, File Size and File Name

The File Attributes panel provides options to filter duplicates by certain file properties. Using the File Size Bigger Than and File Size Smaller Than options in combination with the global Exclude/Include option can search for duplicates inside or outside a certain file size range.

The same applies for the date range and files older, newer or inside/outside a certain period of time can be included or excluded in the results.

There is also an option to filter the files by name which also supports the standard file name wildcards – asterisk that denotes multiple characters or question mark that denotes a single character. For example A*LOT?OF* – will match all files starting with A followed by some other characters then containing LOT followed by a single character that is followed by OF which is followed by any number of other character. Another example is Copy of * – this will match all files that start with “Copy of” and so on.

Using the filter is straightforward and provides a lot of flexibility. Setup the filter options and make sure tho apply them using the OK button in the filtering dialog. The filtering tool bar button will stay pressed (the one with the funnel icon) denoting that the filtering is active. Once the filtering is enabled start the scan to search for the duplicate files that match the filter options.

Find Similar Files and Similar File Names

Find Similar Files

Find Similar Files

The problem behind finding similar files

The process of finding similar files or similar file names is much more complicated than finding duplicate files.  Most duplicate file finders that analyze file content and do not rely on file dates or sizes will find duplicate files easily, while rarely duplicate file finders include features for finding similar items. The problem is that there are billions of file formats that a tool should support in order to be able to open and compare them. That is why there are dedicated duplicate mp3 finder and duplicate image finder applications. The process behind finding similar file names is not quite easy too. Finding file names that contain certain word can be easy, but finding ones that contain two or more words not in the same order can be tricky.

Solution for finding files with similar names and files with similar content

Fast Duplicate File Finder is a popular FREE tool developed by MindGems Inc. It is well known for its accurate results and outstanding performance. Along with the duplicate finding features,  there is an option for finding similar files or similar file names. This works by specifying a percentage of similarity that will be used as a threshold. FDFF differs from the common duplicate finders that claim to utilize fuzzy search or the so called fuzzy matching. While a fuzzy match will rarely reveal proper results FDFF can find similar files even if the data inside is scrambled. If two text files for example contain the same text with scrambled paragraphs or slightly edited sentences they still will be matched and displayed as duplicates in the results list with information regarding the percentage of similarity between the two files. FDFF is free and can be downloaded here: Duplicate File Finder

How to find duplicate files in Windows 7

Finding duplicate files is important not only in Windows 7, but in all operating systems and Windows versions. Finding duplicate files will not only increase your free disk space by performing a disk cleanup, but will also improves system performance by getting rid of useless files. The count of files impacts performance while searching for files. This is an operation that is performed also by the operating system and the applications and improving its speed impacts the overall system performance.

Issues Related to Duplicate File Finders

While duplicate finders can save valuable disk space and improve performance they can lead to total disaster if an unreliable tool is used or important system files are deleted. There are plenty of such tools on the market and one should carefully choose which one to trust.  In next section a description of the key features that a duplicate file finder should have are listed.

Choosing a Reliable Duplicate File Finder

There are plenty of features that one should consider while choosing the best duplicate file finder application. Here is a small list:

  • A duplicate file finder should compare the file content. While there may be an option to search for duplicate file names or files with same size, these are not the measures which qualify two or more files as duplicates.
  • Protection for system files and folder. While it is not advised to remove any files from the system folders a protection inside the application should prevent such possibility by default.
  • Stable performance without crashes.
  • Comprehensive reports with detailed file/folder information.
  • Reliable mechanism for automatic selection of files preserving at least one copy.
  • Filtering option with features to include or exclude certain files or folders in the scan process based on various properties.
  • Option to make a backup of the duplicate files by moving them to a certain folder.

These are the key features that a duplicate file finder should provide. A reliable tool that provides all the features above and even more is the FREE Fast Duplicate File Finder:
