Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder is a professional duplicate photo finder tool. It is the choice of many professional photographers because of its performance and precision. With the release of version 8.0.0.1, it finds duplicate photos 20 times faster utilizing SSSE 3 and SSE4.2 instructions.  Version 8.2.0.1 provided improved loading, saving, and exporting huge projects and was tested with 1 million files and 1 Terabyte of data. Now version 8.3.0.1 provides extra features and improvements.

Our dedicated duplicate photo finder LOOKS at your images in order to find similarities – this is not something that a standard duplicate file finder can do. Here is a detailed explanation about Which duplicate file finder to choose.

Extra Duplicate Photo Search Performance Improvements

In the last major release, we provided 20 times performance improvements for CPUs that support SSSE3 (SSE3S) and SSE4.2 instructions. The speed improvements can reach even 40 times, but 20 times are guaranteed for most systems. In this release, we have provided optimizations for older CPUs that do not support SSSE3 (SSE3S) and those can achieve the 20 times performance increase too.

Exact Duplicate Photo Finding Performance and Precision Improvements

We have optimized the “100% Identical Files” mode which works way faster than before. This mode is much faster than the similarity mode as it does not require heavy computations and image analysis. It is good to use it first in order to remove the exact duplicates and reduce scan time for the similarity mode. The improvements also provide better precision in detecting twin files.

Duplicate Photo Finder Preview Improvements

We have added an option to pan the image using the left mouse button in the large preview window. It now uses separate “Auto stretch”, “Auto shrink” and “Smooth resize” options than the small preview.

There was a small issue that the results would disappear if you start the delete operation and cancel it. This is not something that most users will do, but it is fixed in this release. Please note that if the delete operation was canceled the rest of the results were not deleted at the point of interruption. Only the results in the grid were removed and you had to perform the scan operation again or reload the project in order to display them.

Best Duplicate Image Finder – VSDIF 8.2.0.1 Tested With 1 Million Images

The Best Duplicate Image Finder of 2020 Can Handle 1 Million Photos

Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder is well known for its performance and precision. The last 8.0.0.1 release will find duplicate photos 20 times faster.  Now version 8.2.0.1 improves loading, saving, and exporting huge projects. Do not forget that our dedicated duplicate photo finder LOOKS at your images in order to find similarities – this is not something that a standard duplicate file finder can do. Here is a detailed explanation about Which duplicate file finder to choose.

Faster Save, Load, Export of Large Duplicate Image Finder Projects

Saving, loading, and exporting project files is now hundreds of times faster and uses minimum memory. As the latest version of VSDIF is extremely fast and allows scanning of huge image collections the results list can grow quite large. Saving and loading hundreds of thousands of results could take quite some time and memory. Version 8.2.0.1 is tested and can now handle over 1 million images and export the results in a timely manner.

Improved Symbolic Links

Improved handling of symbolic links and hard-links to folders prevents adding duplicate entries in the search pointing to the same images. Extra improvements to prevent adding duplicate folders are applied too.

Duplicate Photo Finder – Image Search

The “Image Search” button in VSDIF can find similar images of one or more sample photos. We have added many fixes and improvements in this functionality. Along with those you can now add the sample photos in the “Image Search” panel by dragging them inside from Windows Explorer.

Extra Fixes And Improvements

We have improved the error reporting for file operations. As a result, it provides extra information in case of move, delete, and copy issues. Therefore, it will let you faster understand if the issue is related to permissions, locked files, or anything else.

This update includes also a fix for some 32 Bit operating systems. While we do support 32 bit operating systems, we strongly recommend using a 64-bit. However if you are on an old 32 Bit system you should download this update.

You can now add sidecar extensions both with or without a prepended dot. For example “xmp|exf” or “.xmp|.exf”. This will move, delete, or copy the sidecar file that has the same name as the image and having one of the listed extensions.

In addition to the above, there are many small improvements and fixes that are not worth listing in detail.

Find duplicate WebP images – VSDIF 7.2.0.1

The latest version of Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder provides support for the WebP image format. Google announced it as a new open standard for lossy compressed true-color graphics on the web. Current WebP implementation supports both lossy and lossless compression including alpha (transparency) channel. (Find more information on the WebP image format below)

The corrupt DNG images issue

We received complaints from our users who use Adobe Lightroom and DNG files. They reported that VSDIF may crash on preview and/or scan of damaged DNG files. Our research on the topic fond many forum posts regarding DNG files and Adobe Lightroom – Google for “dng+files+lightroom+corrupt”
We have not investigated those in detail. If you have experienced issues with DNG files you should check those posts. Also, make sure to check the version of Adobe Lightroom that you are using. We have not analyzed those in details nor we claim that a relation between the damaged DNG files and Lightroom exists. According to the search results, such a possibility can not be excluded. The latest version of VSDIF can not load the DNG files as they are corrupt, but it will not crash.

We have already provided a pre-release fix for the above issue to all our customers. It is included in this new version too.

WebP – A new image format for the Web

Here is a quote from Google:

” WebP is a modern image format that provides superior lossless and lossy compression for images on the web. Using WebP, webmasters and web developers can create smaller, richer images that make the web faster.”

Announced in 2010 the format aimed to produce smaller files of similar image quality to the popular JPEG scheme. Later Google announced WebP support for animation. They added support for ICC profile, XMP metadata, and tiling (compositing very large images from maximum 16384×16384 tiles) too. Google began to experiment with lossless compression and support for transparency (alpha channel) in both lossless and lossy modes; support has been enabled by default in libwebp 0.2.0 (16 August 2012). According to Google’s tests a conversion from PNG to WebP results in a 45% reduction in file size when using PNGs found on the Internet. A 28% reduction in size was achieved when compared to PNGs that are re-compressed with pngcrush or PNGOUT.

WebP Support

Google Chrome, Firefox, Edge, the Opera browser, and other tools and software libraries support natively WebP. Developers have also added support to a variety of image editing tools.

Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder 6.4.0.1 Detects Similar Photos Even if Frames or Borders Are Added

Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder 6.4.0.1 Brings New Features For The Holidays – Find Similar Photos Even if Some Of Them Have Borders/Frames And The Others No

Two major new features are added to VSDIF – an option for detecting similar photos with borders/frames and an auto-check feature for selecting images with shorter file names.

Auto-check Images With Shorter File Names

The name of the feature is quite self-explanatory – it will mark the files with the shortest file names first leaving the one with the longest name unmarked. Some users prefer to rename their photos by adding descriptive file names and this feature helps exactly in such cases. One ca easily remove the files that are not renamed as those are usually with short file names generated automatically by the camera. VSDIF already has an option to auto-mark files with longer file names for cases where the user wants to remove duplicate copies that usually are named COPY (X) of….

Detect Similar Images With Solid Borders

While this new feature is not a miracle and it may fail with multi-color complex frames that alter the appearance of the image completely, it does quite a good job when the word comes for simple frames and borders. It comes handy also in cases where the photos are scanned – this process usually generates extra borders around the images. As this new feature is not resource-intensive it is enabled by default in the application settings. Though it will not make noticeable difference in terms of performance for medium-sized image libraries it can be turned off in the application settings if one intends to compare large quantities of photos that are known not to include borders. The feature also helps to detect images that are saved or captured from the web and usually include part of the background.

VSDIF 5 – Duplicate Photo Finder Adds Unicode Support and EXIF Information

Find Duplicate Photos

Duplicate Photo Finder

Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder 5.0.0.1 is Released

We are proud to announce that version 5.0.0.1 of the award-winning Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder application is now released and available for download. There are plenty of new features and major changes in this version of the tool.

VSDIF now adds full support for UNICODE file names. What this mean is that the application can handle file names in any alphabet simultaneously. Older versions of the application could handle file name only in two alphabets at the same time.

There is a huge performance improvement in the comparison phase where the application now utilizes all the cores of a CPU. This means that on Intel i5 CPU with 4 cores that phase will run at least 4 times faster.

There is a new EXIF information panel added to the right of the results list. This panel will display the EXIF data for the currently selected image in the list. The folders and scan settings panel provide a collapse feature in order to make room for the new EXIF panel while reviewing the results.

An extra option in the auto-check panel provides features to select files with newer dates.

Improvements to the preview panel are applied too. The “First in group” image is now updated when the list is sorted. There is an option to ALT-Click an image from the results list in order to update the “First in group” image.

Improved folders list – added display of the Exclude From Auto-check and Exclude From Self-scan features. As you already know these handy features make it possible to compare two or more folders against each other and also select a “source” folder in order to exclude the items inside from auto-check.

There are plenty of other small fixes and GUI improvements. Click here to find the complete list of changes in VSDIF 5.0.0.1
