File Size Units

As for everything else there is a unit that measures the size of a file in order to determine how much space it occupies on the storage. The smallest unit is the Bit and it has two states – 0 (Zero, Off, False) or 1 (One, On, True). Of course having only two states can hold information whether an option is enabled or disabled, but it does not help in expressing numbers or letters. This is the reason why the bits are grouped together in order to form the next larger unit – Byte.

The Byte is a group of 8 Bits and can represent a number in the range of 0 to 255 – it is limited by the count of all the possible combinations that the 8 bits can have and they are 2 to the power of 8 which equals 256. In order to represent digits and letters every symbol is assigned a number from 0 to 255 – those are determined by the ASCII table. So a byte can represent a character, digit or a symbol according to its value. Nowadays a Unicode or UTF-8 standard is more popular, where 2 bytes represent a single symbol – this helps to support multiple languages, alphabets and special characters.

The next larger unit after the Byte is KiloByte and contains 1024 bytes. Click this File Size Information link for a table representation and a free file size calculator / convertor.

  • 1 B = 1 byte;
  • 1 KB = 1000 B;
  • 1 MB = 1000 KB;
  • 1 GB = 1000 MB or 1 000 000 000 bytes.
  • 1 byte = 8 bits
  • 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes
  • 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes
  • 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes
  • 1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes

1 MiB = 2 ^ (to the power of) 20 bytes = 1024 kibibytes = 1048576bytes

Mebi is a prefix derived from the words mega and binary, indicating its origin in the closeness in value to the SI prefix mega. One mebibyte (MiB) is 2 ^ (to the power of) 20 (i.e., 1024 x 1024) bytes or 1048576 bytes. Megabyte (MB) means 10 ^ (to the power of) 6 (i.e. 1000 x 1000 = 1000000) bytes and differs from MiB.

Download a free tool that can Analyze Directory and File Sizes. While the size of every file is displayed next to every file in Windows Explorer, such information is missing for the folders as it has to be calculated by analyzing the content of the directory – all its files and sub-folders. This free tool visualizes this information in a neat table and provides nice charts in order to easily check the distribution of the drive space. It also provides reports for the largest files and largest folders and helps with the disk cleanup process.

File Size Analysis – Folder Size 1.9.0.0

File Size Analysis

File Size Analysis

Analyzing file sizes has never been easier. Version 1.9.0.0 of our Free Folder Size application is now available for download.

Data is no longer stored in the application folder to prevent issues in Windows 7 and Windows Vista. We provide Folder Size Portable instead, which will store all the data files in its start-up folder. File size analysis is now even easier with the portable version as it does not require installation and you can carry it on your USB Flash drive wherever you go.

An issue is fixed that caused a crash in Folder Size if Adobe Flash was not installed. The link to the Adobe Flash in Folder Size will pop up in a new Internet Explorer window for easier installation.

A new options dialog will let you enable/disable error logging, set the thread priority and set the columns hidden/visible state.

The folder names in the chart are now enclosed in square brackets so that you can easier distinguish files and folders.

The new version comes packed with lots of new features and improvements.

The chart can now be used to navigate and it’s performance is dramatically improved. In addition to the new chart improvements there is also an option to export it as JPEG image.

A lot of new shortcuts are added including CTRL+C that will copy the path to the current item in the clipboard. The Alt+Left and Alt+Right shortcuts will navigate through the browse history which can now also be controlled via the special shortcuts on your keyboard or mouse. Please check the help file for a complete list of the available shortcuts.

The columns in the files list can be rearranged by dragging and also be hidden/displayed via context menu that will pop-up by right clicking on the header.

The  improved support for Windows 7 will better handle symlinks. Error logging is provided in case of issues caused by files with bad data. Folder Size 1.8.0.0 better handles files with issues and will not terminate the scan in case of damaged file data.

For a complete list of all the changes in this release please check the Folder Size’s What’s New Section.
